Bilberry, which is a fruit similar to American blueberries, has a long history of medicinal uses dating back to the middle ages. It continues to be widely used in Europe and is making inroads in the US. It contains fatty acids, flavenoids, and tanins that have been shown to strengthen capillaries and connective tissue. It is particularly useful in treating poor eyesight and improving vein health. Studies have shown that Bilberry can improve night-vision making it particularly useful for drivers who have difficulties seeing well at night. Because it improves circulation it is also useful for supporting heart and circulatory related illnesses.
Bilberry contains anthocyanosides which are potent anti-oxidents that strengthen capillary walls, improve red blood cells, and have cholesterol-lowering effects. The herb is also a vasodialator that opens blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It is used to treat age related vision problems.
The anthocyanocides in the herb also help stabilize collagen tissues such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage. It should be included on anyone’s list of herbs for aging.
Safety Issues to Note:
Bilberry, a commonly eaten food, has been found safe and non-toxic, even in very high doses, in a wide variety of studies. There are no known drug interactions. It may interfere with iron absorption so it should not be used if anemic.
Top uses include:
Vision support, diarrhea, blood sugar, inflammation, menstrual cramps, night vision, stress, circulatory system health, urinary tract problems, vein support.
